EXERCISE IN MATHEMATICS
Direction: Observe how the following problems are solved:
Problem 1)
A certain football team has a number of wins and
loses. In its first 40 games, 40% were loses. How many of the 20 games the team
has still to play to have its number of victories equal to 65% of total games
played?
Solution: Loses 40 = 4 x 40 = 16
games
Wins 40 =
40 – 16 = 24 wins in the first 40 games
Total Wins
= 65% the games
W40 + W20
= 65 (40 + 20) = 39.00
24 + W20 = 39
W
20 = 39 – 24 = 15 games (Answer)
Problem 2)
If 40 students can paint a school fence in 7
days, how long will it take 10 students to do the same job?
Solution: Greater : Less = Greater : Less
14 students : 10 students = x days : 7 days
10x
= 14 (7)
10x
= 98
x = 9.8 days (Answer)
Problem 3)
In an office, 240 reams of bond paper were
distributed equally among the different divisions found in the place. If there
had been 4 divisions more and each would receive 4/5 as many, how many
divisions were there?
Solution: Let N = No. of
divisions
Problem 4)
Pursuant to a Presidential Decree giving land to
the landless, a certain land transfer operation in Bulacan was completed in 14
months. This was about 3/10 less of the entire number of month allowed to
finish the operation. Find the length of time allotted for the purpose.
Solution: Let = total time
Problem 5)
If machine A can produce 200 articles in
1 hr. and 78 minutes and machine B can make the same number in 2 hrs. and 36
minutes, how long will it take for both machines to make 200 articles?
Problem 6)
The population of a certain urban area
increased by 8% yearly. If its population was increased to 485 in 1973, what
was its population in 1976?
Solution: Population
in 1973 = 485
Population
in 1974 = 1.08 (485) = 524
Population
in 1975 = 1.08 (524) = 566
Population
in 1976 = 1.08 (566) = 612 (Answer)
Problem 7)
Find out how much a man must leave his
family so that if ½ of it is invested at 10% and the other half at 12%, the
investment will yield an annual income of P9,295.00.
Problem 8)
Mrs. Santos prepares 12 qts of calamansi
beverage for her family. If the drink contains 20% calamansi juice, how much
water should she add to reduce the calamansi portion to 15%?
Problem 9)
If a group of 20 factory workers can
finish a job in 6 days, how many more workers should be put on the job to
complete the job in 4 days?
Solution: Let x no. of
men to finish in 4 days
20
: x = 4 : 6
4 x
= 120
x = 30 men to finish in 4 days
